Special Lectures at NCH London

6th December – Sir Christopher Ricks lecture

Beckett’s Ways with Shakespeare’s Words

Samuel Beckett, an Irishman, wrote both in English and in French, translating both ways, and he wrote not only plays but novels, short stories, and poems. One of his great resources, in both comedy and tragedy, was the works of Shakespeare – who did not write in French. Christopher Ricks’s talk attends to Beckett’s lifelong engagement with the servitudes and grandeurs of literature that is to exist in two tongues.

The lecture takes place at NCH Bedford Square London. The lecture starts at 6.15pm with tea being served from 5pm.

12th December– Lawrence Krauss Lecture

Thinking like a physicist: From Cows to the Universe

Physicists use a toolkit built up over the last 400 years that allows us to solve seemingly intractable problems by turning them into simpler problems. Krauss will talk about the importance of approximation, and why treating cows as a sphere can take you a long way; the beauty of numbers if you don’t think like a mathematician; the order of magnitude estimation and how it can change your life.

The lecture takes place at NCH Bedford Square London. The lecture starts at 6.15pm with tea being served from 5pm.

These lectures are free to attend but need to be booked through your school.  St.Clare’s students should contact Melanie Moorhouse.
