University of Leeds Year 12 Biological Sciences Summer School 2017 –
Deadline to apply 26th April 2017
The University of Leeds would like to invite year 12 (IB1) students to apply to its Biological Sciences Summer School, held over two days from Tuesday 27th – Wednesday 28th June 2017. It is designed for students studying either A-Level/IB Higher Level biology or chemistry who also have an interest in studying biosciences at university.
Students who attend will choose their area of interest, and carry out their own research project from start to finish in that area. Attendees will find out more about the different bioscience subject areas such as biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and ecology, as well as spend time developing their research skills in our best facilities.
Throughout, the summer school students will be working alongside current biosciences undergraduates and stay overnight in the University’s halls of residence, so as to also get a taste of what university life would feel like outside of their academic study. A
t the end of the event, there will be a workshop on scientific careers, and on the skills they can now reference in their UCAS application. Evaluation shows that students feel they improve their skills across practical lab skills, confidence, UCAS statement content and understanding of University life.
Scholarship for students with some criteria for disadvantage
Each place costs 50 GBP, excluding travel to and from the summer school. However, some students are eligible for a scholarship, where this fee is waivered and they are reimbursed for their travel. Applicants just need to indicate which two of the seven ‘Access to Leeds’ criteria applies to them (More information can be found at www.stem.leeds.ac.uk/biosummerschool)
With 50 places in total, and schools from all over the country being invited to apply, the application process is competitive. The application deadline is the 26th April 2017, and students can expect to hear if they have been successful by mid-May.
